Sr. Fran Dempsey, my partner in crime at the Women’s Writing Retreat, leads our group through a relaxation mediation and journal prompt.
I’ll be teaching once again this summer at the Women’s Writing Retreat in July at the Pyramid Life Center in the beautiful Adirondack’s.
Explore ways to further your journal practice by integrating your written entries with art journal techniques. Using a wide array of art media (watercolor, acrylic paint, pencils/markers, collage, printmaking, and more) we will create expressive backgrounds, layout ideas and visual elements to express and integrate your written responses to thoughtful prompts onto the page.
A wide array of art supplies will be available (including a basic composition notebook), however to enhance your art journaling experience, you may want to bring a journal specifically made for mixed media whose paper can handle both wet and dry media (such as the Strathmore Visual Journal Spiral Bound 5.5” x 8”-Mixed Media Vellum approximately $7 through Amazon). Also, you may wish to bring an apron, personal ephemera, a white Sakura Gelly Roll pen or white Uniball UM-153, as well as any other favorite supplies.
Sister Francine Dempsey is a local writer who has published personal narratives and is a long-time journal writing facilitator. Joanne Van Genderen is a visual artists whose art can be found in the Northshire Bookstore as well as other local venues.

Women’s Writing Retreat July 2017, Pyramid Lake in the New YorkAdirondacks
I had an opportunity to co-teach a workshop with Sr. Fran Dempsey. Our focus was creating a mixed media journal integrating art with text. The creative women at this retreat were inspiring.
